Young First Tuesday
First Tuesday - the events group I admit to having co-founded - attracted quite enough naive entrepreneurs. Now, going one up, Young First Tuesday, an offshoot of the matchmaking event aimed at the 14-19 year-old demographic. Now I really feel old.

Oracle to offer free online storage
Phew, a replacement for Driveway and myspace and all the other free hard drive companies that have been cutting services recently. But, more importantly, Oracle promises a searchable document store. For anyone tired of using the Windows search function, and watching paint dry, a blessing.

Honesty isn't a policy, laid-off techies say
The most common complaint about layoffs is that they're done without notice. That's the conclusion of this study by Techies.com. But whoever heard of layoffs with notice? That would leave staff in such a state of uncertainty. The simple answer: there is no simple answer.

From Outsell: Moreover Technologies Continues in Shift Toward Enterprise
"Susan Atherton has recently been appointed CEO at Moreover, and is expected to continue the company's move towards a focus on enterprise markets. Since introducing its solutions for Intranets last fall, Moreover has picked up 40 enterprise customers. A recent press release states that Moreover will continue to offer free news searching for individuals on its Web site, but that its main commercial focus will be on enterprises. Yet another example of a content company wisely following the money as the bottom drops out of Internet advertising."

OJR: The Perils of Covering Porn
"Myth 1: Porn is a $10 billion industry." Internet media people convince themselves they could have been successful if they had only lowered themselves to the level of their readers. Not as simple as that. Emmanuelle Richard, first drawn to the porn industry while a reporter in Budapest, picks apart the assumption that porn is the only good online business. Next up, deconstruction of internet gambling.

Bardot A Go-Go
I'm not sure when Bastille Day became Europe's national day. But I'm more likely to celebrate July 14 than the Queen's Birthday. And San Francisco seems to be full of Bastille Day celebrations this weekend. Not sure whether it's the Eurotrash contingent, or locals too pretentious to celebrate July 4. Belden Lane is the scene of the busiest street event, but victims of last year's crush are going to Bardot A Go-Go.

Inside.com: Ambitious 24-Year-Old Pushes Plan to Buy Salon and Turn It Into a Clearinghouse for Other Publications
Hilarious. Bhu Srinivasan always loved making a deal more than running a business. "Let's do a deal, let's do a deal," he used to say. He once tried to sell us his previous company while bad-mouthing Moreover to one of our key partners. Salon should be wary. I guess they will be: Bhu promises to fire the reporters.

OJR Tools of the Trade: Content Management for the Masses
Ben Sullivan - ex-Pressflex - explores lightweight content management. "You can look at it as an information food chain," Denton said. "An article is produced, then Moreover indexes it and brings it to the attention of a Web logger. And the Web log owner then adds selection and commentary to that to create a repackaged (product)."

Rebecca Mead in the Guardian on Startup.com
"A friend of mine who is now in his mid-30s and who runs a successful internet company used to complain to me, two years ago, that he was afraid he was too old for the business. Nowadays, he tells me, he is happy if people take him for being older than his years. Grey hair and gravitas are desirable attributes, and "visionary" has become a dirty word."

Moreover chief steps down
That's me. The hiring of a career CEO has been in the works since January. It was time. Susan Atherton - formerly at DoubleClick and Oracle - is a great catch. I'll stay involved in Moreover, but Susan will be leading the company's further expansion into the enterprise information market.
