Networked dating
Sixdegrees may have failed, but there's an explosion of friend-of-friend networks on the web. (These are services which, once you enter enough email addresses, show how your friends and acquaintances are connected.) Ryze emerged early last year, Anil Dash has a link today to POP, which dubs itself the people browser, I've had three emails since this morning from friends on LinkedIn or Everyone's Connected. And, coincidentally, I've been inviting people into Friendster, which is my favorite of all these services. Friendster was intriguing, early on, but the service was often overloaded. It's still flaky, but seems to be attracting a critical mass of coastal people. Spreading like wildfire among the Eastside hipsters. One can do a search on Friendster, as one would on an online dating site. The difference: Friendster shows how you're connected to that person. And, somehow, all the cuties are friends, or friends of friends, of Blaise and Choire. I really must hang out with them more.
