Peter of Baghdad
For friends of Peter Maass, he just called: he's in Baghdad, safe and well. I could hear the sound of men yelling in Arabic -- down, down, Saddam -- in the background. Peter, who attached himself to the Marines, got into the city center a couple of hours ago. He's at the Palestine, trying to get a room, if his colleagues have had the foresight to book some spares, take his first proper shower in weeks, and down a few beers. Peter says the city seems quiet: the crowd, at least outside the Palestine, is small, outnumbered by the assembled reporters. "Oh, there's Peter Arnett." The Iraqis are trying to pull down a statue of Saddam; it would be a lot easier if the foreign media would pitch in. #
