And now for the good news
The United States has done some ugly things to win international support for the war on Iraq: the president has schmoozed with Saudi princes; the aspirations of the Kurds have been sold down the river; a blind eye turned to the Russian brutality in Chechnya, and Chinese colonialism in Xinjiang.
   But here is one of the better side-effects of war: the US agreed yesterday to permit more imports of clothing from Turkey. Incidentally, the international aid establishment is by no means aghast at the conflict in the Middle East. Historically, foreign aid spending has tracked international tensions, as the great powers compete for support around the world.
