Winer on Bloogle
One of the frustrations of Google's acquisition of Blogger: no commentary from Dave Winer. It's at times like these one realizes how important he is to intelligent discussion of internet innovation. But Winer founded a competitor to Blogger, and he's been traveling, so it's only now that he's commenting.
He puts the Google acquisition into context, comparing it to the wave of acquisitions in the 1980s, as PC software companies acquired Macintosh boutiques. But Winer's take on the logic of the Bloogle combination is surprising. He believes that direct access to the Blogger database isn't worth much, because Google can already index off the web, and the users own their content. His take: Google will bundle Blogger into their enterprise service.
I think he's wrong. There's definitely an advantage to plugging directly into the Blogger database. Evan Williams has already hinted at realtime search. And Google's ad-supported search business is doing so well; the enterprise product just isn't such a priority. Google bought Blogger for the data, not the software. Anyway, what do either of us know?
